1. Who are we
In this privacy policy, the Canine Genetics Centre (or “we”, the CGC), means “The Canine Genetics Centre at the University of Cambridge”, a group within the University of Cambridge Veterinary department. The CGC is a ‘data controller’ for the purposes of data protection regulations
When you visit our site we hold certain information about you for service and security reasons. For more information on the requirements of Cambridge University, please see https://www.cam.ac.uk/about-this-site/privacy-policy
2. How we collect information about you
When you interact with us directly: This could be if you ask us about our research, register with us for an event, make a donation to us, subscribe to our newsletter or other marketing or fundraising communications, purchase a DNA test through Canine Genetic Testing (CAGT), or otherwise provide us with your personal information. This includes when you phone us, visit our website, get in touch through the post, or in person.
When you interact with us through third parties: This could be if you provide a donation through a third party such as Just Giving or The University Philanthropy department and provide your consent for your personal information to be shared with us.
When you visit our website: We gather general information which might include which pages you visit most often and which services, events or information is of most interest to you. We may also track which pages you visit when you click on links in emails from us.
We also use “cookies” to help our site run effectively. We use this information to personalise the way our website is presented when you visit to make improvements and to ensure we provide the best service and experience for you. Wherever possible we use anonymous information which does not identify individual visitors to our website. We also use a “Facebook pixel” on our websites and on some third-party processor websites to track how Facebook users have interacted with our site. This is used to target relevant content or advertisements on Facebook or Instagram.
3. Information we collect about you
When contacting us through this site we may ask you to submit information such as your name, e-mail address, postal address, telephone number and your dog’s details. You are under no obligation to provide such information. However, if you should choose to withhold requested information, we may not be able to respond to your enquiry or proceed for your request.
When you visit our website, we use cookies and page-tagging techniques to collect the request made by your browser to the server hosting the website. We use this information to ensure the security of our websites and we may need to use or disclose it in the event of a security concern or incident.
4. How your information is used
Sample recruitment: When you request, and subsequently submit, a sample as part of any of our research programs we will store your data in a secure database, only accessible by current members of the CGC. When sharing samples with collaborating research centres, all owner data is removed and dog details obfuscated. Samples, and data, submitted to our research programs are kept indefinably unless you request it to be removed/destroyed. Any samples sent to CAGT, whether a DNA test is performed or not, become the property of the CGC and may be used in research. The results of any research will be published on an anonymous basis i.e. animals and owners will not be named.
Advertising online: In order to ensure our online advertising is effective and cost efficient, we sometimes share data with Google and social media sites. This enables us to keep our costs down and reach the people who are more likely to support our work. We use lookalike audiences to create audiences of people with similar characteristics to CGC supporters, who may be shown our advertising. This is a very effective way for us to find new people likely to support our work or purchase our DNA tests. Data shared with Meta and Google platforms is used for no other purposes than described above and is not shared with any third parties. If you do not want your information to be used in this way, please contact us.
5. Who your information is shared with
Donation processing (inc Gift Aid): All donations, including Gift Aid donation, will be handled by the Cambridge Philanthropy department. For more information on their privacy policy, please see https://www.philanthropy.cam.ac.uk/privacy-policy-and-cookies
