5th February 2026 – Puppy Health Awareness Day

The Canine Genetics Centre (CGC) are very excited to be holding an educational day for members of the public who are thinking about buying a new puppy, on Thursday 5th February 2026, at the University of Cambridge’s West Hub facility.
The aim of the day is to help prospective puppy buyers better understand the health problems that different breeds can suffer from and, importantly, how they can be avoided.
We can’t guarantee that any dog won’t ever become ill, but this event will help puppy buyers avoid many of the common pitfalls associated with finding a new best friend and choose a puppy that has the best chance possible of living a long and healthy life.
Throughout the day participants will have the opportunity to hear from vets and canine geneticists who are world experts in the field of canine health.
- Dr Jane Ladlow – brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome in flat-faced dogs
- Bruno Lopes – intervertebral disc disease in short-legged dogs
- Paul McPherson – the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme
- Professor Mike Herrtage – the BVA/KC hip dysplasia scheme
- Dr Cathryn Mellersh – DNA testing
- Ellen Schofield – how to spot a health-conscious breeder
- Hannah Pinnock – how to keep your new puppy healthy
The day will include a series of presentations, each with the opportunity to ask plenty of questions, and attendees will be able to learn from these experts in an informal, relaxed and friendly setting.
The educational day is funded by the West Hub Small Grants Programme. Tickets are now on-sale for this event, priced at £5 per person including tea/coffee throughout the day and a light lunch. Places are limited to 50 people and booking closes on Monday 2nd February.
