Labrador Sudden Death

A multidisciplinary team from the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge is investigating reports of sudden death in young Labrador retrievers.

The team, which comprises staff from the Canine Genetics Centre alongside veterinary cardiologists and neurologists from the Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital, is increasingly concerned by reports of sudden, unexpected deaths in young Labrador Retrievers – often occurring during rest or sleep – in dogs that appeared otherwise healthy. Our team is committed to investigating the underlying causes of these tragic events and working toward strategies for prevention.

Our research aims to support breeders and owners by exploring potential genetic causes, with the long-term goal of developing a genetic test. We are also investigating possible links to cardiac and sleep-related conditions. Early identification, case reporting, and data collection are crucial to advancing our understanding of this condition and improving outcomes.

How can you help?

We are encouraging owners and breeders who sadly experience the sudden loss of their Labrador to reach out to us. We have produced information sheets (one for owners and one for vets) outlining how owners and breeders can help, in the sad event of a sudden death, and providing the owner with guidance and support.

Donations from grass-roots stakeholders are a crucial source of funding for the Canine Genetics Centre. One of the best ways to support the Canine Genetics Centre, including helping to fund our investigations into sudden death in young Labradors, is to become a Friend of the Canine Genetics Centre. This is our regular giving scheme that we set up to help our supporters spread their donations over the course of a year, and to enable us to claim gift aid if eligible. If you become a Friend of the Canine Genetics Centre you will be providing vital support, not only for our breed-specific investigations (including sudden death in young Labradors) but also for our core team and resources, including our precious DNA sample collection. Full details are available on our website and you can cancel your direct debit at any time. Thank You
